Subject: Caribbean Fish Collecting

Rob,

I am a diver, not an aquarium person at all, but I thought you might
be able to provide some information to help with a possible problem
on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

I just received a note from bill2s at caribsurf.com, Mr. Bill Tewes, the
owner of Dive St. Vincent. He has discovered that a company
has just arrived to start collecting fish for the aquarium trade.

There are no laws regulating collecting and no one in the government
there has the information necessary to insure that the company does
a responsible job of collecting. Bill and many others there (and I) are
afraid that they may use some of the chemical methods used in Indonesia
and the Philippines and will destroy everything.

Could you help by pointing us to documentation or providing input
to us to carry to the government officials so that we can try to prevent
destruction of the underwater environment? What are acceptable
methods of collecting and how do others regulate collectors?

If you can't help, but can direct us to others who might provide
assistance, we would really appreciate it.

Regards,

environment there?
