CAMPAIGN FOR NUCLEAR PHASEOUT WANTS A NATIONAL

The Campaign for Nuclear Phaseout based in Ottawa, wishes to hire a

1989, the Campaign for Nuclear Phaseout (CNP) works to phase out
nuclear

The Commission on the Environment (COE) based in San Francisco wishes

Department of the Environment for the City and County of San Francisco.
The COE is a body of seven members, each of which serves a four-year
term, appointed by the Mayor. The Commission reviews, investigates and
makes recommendations to policies proposed for adoption by any City

sustainability. The Commission Secretary provides support to the COE and

US NSF NEEDS THREE BIOLOGISTS IN HAWAII

The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) will appoint three
field biologists for a NSF-funded study of the ecology and evolution of
avian disease in Hawaii. These are 3-year, full-time positions
beginning November 1, 2001. Field work will be conducted in 9 study
areas on the eastern flank of Mauna Loa Volcano on the island of Hawaii,
ranging from sea level to 6000 ft elevation. Field sites include lowland
forest on rough a'a lava substrate, where conditions are hot and muggy
and mosquitoes are thick and voracious; to wet rainforests at mid- and
high-elevation sites that are cool, very rainy, with difficult terrain,
deep, eat-your-boots mud, and dense vegetation. Each biologist will be
responsible for training, supervision, morale and logistics for a field
crew of 3-6 volunteer interns. Field work includes mist netting,
banding, and bleeding forest birds; processing blood samples; conducting
variable circular plot (VCP) counts; conducting vegetation sampling;
measuring seasonal phenology of fruiting and flowering plants; measuring
indices of predator abundance; onducting mosquito trapping using CO2,
stinky water, and resting traps, and surveys for mosquito larvae and
breeding sites; nest-finding and monitoring; resighting color-banded
birds; and data entry and management. The successful candidates will
have a B.S. in Ecology, Wildlife, or related field; two years of field
experience (includes volunteer experience); proficiency in mist netting
and banding passerines and ability to train others to mist net;
experience supervising a field crew; willingness to learn to bleed birds
using jugular venipuncture; and full color vision and full hearing.
Should have experience with Hawaiian passerines and familiarity with
Hawaiian forest ecosystems; experience bleeding birds by jugular
venipuncture; experience conducting VCP or point counts. Salary
approximately US $22,800 per year. Biologists will be based at Kilauea
Field Station of the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, USGS-BRD

politicians, local editors and open public dockets. Priority campaigns
for the coming year include stopping national missile defense,

implement strategies to increase members and track our progress. The

vendors. The successful candidate will have a B.A. or associate degree,

TYNDALL CENTRE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE, U.K. SEEKING FOUR
SENIOR POSITIONS

The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in the UK wishes to
appoint three (3) exceptional researchers to Tyndall anchor scientist
positions. These Fellowships provide exciting opportunities to work with
the UK's new national centre for integrated climate change research.
The Fellowships are in the following three areas of work: decarbonising
modern societies (engineering science background); adapting to climate
change (economics background); and sustaining the coastal zone
(environmental and/or information science background). You will have a
PhD in a relevant discipline and some years of post-doctoral research
experience. The first of the Research Fellows will be based at UMIST
and the latter two at either the University of East Anglia (UEA) or the

as liaison with the three funding Research Councils NERC, EPSRC and

Director(s) across a range of activities, but will also be encouraged to
develop their own research activities in relation to the objectives of
